Remote Control Ceiling Fan

One of man's greatest comforts, the ceiling fan, has been with him since the Industrial Revolution.  Ceiling fans have always been the complement to home cooling for over a century.  It adds charm to the room and the whirl of the paddle and breeze evokes a romantic feel when life was a little slower and more relaxed. Being with us for so long, there have been a lot of developments as far as style, design, materials, finish, configurations, size, materials, accessories and prices are concerned. Today's ceiling fans, though still a great cooling solution that is energy efficient, is a far cry from those used by your ancestors.

Ceiling fans can be used during both summer and winter months.  Used in conjunction with air conditioners, you can set the thermostat to a higher setting and get the same level of comfort. Although they do not really lower the temperature in summer, the room becomes cooler by about 8 degrees because of the breeze that is circulated and saves up to 40% on air conditioning costs. Most ceiling fans have a reverse mode which is used during winter where warm air is pushed up to the ceiling.  The fan brings down this warm air and re-circulates it throughout the room which can lower heating costs up to 10%. Ceiling fans only use up about enough power as a light bulb rated at 60 watts that consumes about 1 cent per hour depending on size and speed capacities of fan.

Ceiling fans are usually installed where light fixtures were originally or are usually installed.  Instead of a light switch, some fans come with a control box with various setting or timer options.  Fans without switch boxes can also be operated with pull cords that control fan speed and light. More modern fans now come with the convenience of a remote control.  When installed on a lighting fixture, there is no need to have a switch or a control box.  The remote control ceiling fan will have its own receiver and the remote control will do all the tasks.  There are is a more sophisticated remote control ceiling fan that can be pre-programmed to turn on and off automatically as well as adjust fan speed or control the light on an irregular basis when you are not at home.

Fan size will depend on many factors such as the size or the room and its primary use.  The general rule of course is that the bigger your room is, the lengthier your blades and the more powerful your fan motor should be in order to generate the appropriate air movement needed to cool or warm the room. 36" blades are for small rooms under 72 square feet while 36" to 42" are recommended for rooms from 76 to 144 square feet. Medium bedrooms, small living area or patio measuring 144 to 225 square feet needs fans with a blade length or 48" while larger bedrooms or living areas with 225 to 400 square feet area should use a fan with 50" to 56" blade. For rooms that are 18 feet or longer, 2 or more fans are ideal. There should be a proper balance between size or the room and size of the fan. Fans for outdoor areas like decks and patios should be well protected from the elements.  Ideally, it should have 3 walls of protection as it cannot withstand exposure to water.

Ceiling height is crucial also in determining the installation of fans, most especially the remote control ceiling fan.  If the ceiling height is more than the standard 2.4 meters, there should be an extension rod.  Some fans come with an extension rod with the standard length of 900mm. Others come with a fixture that will allow the fan to be installed on both cathedral and ordinary flat ceilings. Standard installation height should be at least 300mm from the ceiling, 200mm from the walls and 2.1 meters from the floor to the blades of the fan.  Fans too near the ceiling moves less air.  Strong support is essential for ceiling fans because of its centrifugal motion and the heavy weight of both control and blades especially for the remote control ceiling fan which has the receiving box in its main mechanism.

Prices of fans can range from $40 to as high as several hundreds of dollars depending on brand, quality, size and features.  The more expensive brands are well designed with high quality materials with noiseless function and longer durability.  The motors are usually capable of variable speeds and have a longer warranty, with some at least 10 years.

A remote control ceiling fan is a welcome addition to any room and can definitely add more charm and comfort. You can just relax and do whatever you are doing without having to exert additional effort in adjusting your fan's control.  All you need is the remote control beside you.
